How to Throw an Unforgettable Corporate Holiday Party
By Ginny Northrup, Director of Sales at Rally
It’s the most wonderful time of year: Holiday Office Party Season.
I know, I know, we have barely brought out our chunky cable knits, have only just looked up butternut squash recipes, and haven’t even considered what we’re dressing up as for Halloween, but in an event planner’s world, the Holiday season starts early.
When most people hear “Office Party”, they are either imagining a snoozefest full of small talk and sad cheese plates, or it is the event that employees look forward to all year. Don’t settle for beige when you can offer your employees a neon experience.
With over 12 years of experience planning everything from intimate weddings to corporate events for over 4,000 guests, here are my guidelines on how to create an end-of-the-year office party that make employees fall even more in love with your company (and maybe even call out sick the next day 😉).
1. Pick a Venue with Personality
Ditch the boring office space or ballroom. This is not a Tuesday meeting. Go for something fun, vibrant, and out-of-the-box, somewhere with great vibes and built-in activities. You want a space where your employees walk in and immediately say, “this is going to be a good time.”
2. Don’t Let Them Get Bored
People crave action! Don’t force your employees to just sit and sip—give them something to do! From pickleball tournaments to photo booths, and even s’more stations, interactive fun is the way to go. The key is to keep everyone moving and laughing. When people are engaged, they bond over shared experiences, and most importantly, don’t leave early!
3. Food & Drinks for Everyone
Food matters… like, really matters. Sometimes the difference between "my company actually appreciates me" and "just another day at the office" is a choice between fresh ahi tuna wonton nachos or soggy green beans. But, in my expert opinion, drinks matter even more. Signature cocktails, thoughtful mocktails for non-drinkers, and local beer (because who doesn’t love local) are all critical pieces to show your employees “we’re thinking of you”. Include gluten free bites or vegan desserts to make sure everyone can enjoy. Make it festive, fun, and delicious—because, just like that two-hour budget meeting held at 4pm on a Friday, no one remembers a bland buffet.
4. Who Doesn’t Love a Good Theme?
It’s all in the details, and nothing pulls a party together like a solid theme. Decor and vibe matter- set the mood. Décor should match your theme: think of thoughtful touches like centerpieces, custom signage, or themed photo backdrops. Personalize with your company colors or logos to tie the holidays into your brand!
5. Give Them Something to Go Home With
After all the grind, late nights, and deadlines, your team wants to feel appreciated. Give them something more than a “thanks for coming.” Think swag bags packed with cool gear, raffle prizes that don’t disappoint, or a little something personalized that shows they actually care (I’m partial to a custom pickleball paddle, but that’s just me).
6. Raise Your Glass!
Give credit where it is due. Take a moment to recognize your team at the end of the year in a public setting! Keep it short, sweet, and most importantly, fun! Some of my favorite awards include: “Best Zoom Background", "Most Likely to Answer an Email at 2AM”, and “Snack Drawer Queen”. Make it interactive and have your employees vote, either before or during the party.
7. Let the Good Times Roll!
It can be tempting, but don’t over-schedule. Leave time for your team to relax, kick back, grab a drink, and actually enjoy each other! Allow people to be themselves, this is where the real party magic happens.
Your holiday party should feel like a gift- something your team talks about and remembers. Big ideas, belly laughs, and bonds that go beyond that night.
